Wilhelmsthal Palace near Eisenach Travel with Goethe: Wilhelmsthal |
Wilhelmsthal Palace is situated on the road from Eisenach to Bad Salzungen. Nearby the Rennsteig hiking and cycling trail takes you to the "Hohe Sonne" stop. Built from 1712 to 1715 as summer residence for the dukes of Eisenach, the buildings had been adapted to contemporary tastes for three centuries. Today's palace park was originally designed by Hermann Prince of Pueckler-Muskau. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stayed in Wilhelmsthal, Franz Liszt and Czar Alexander. The concert master of the Eisenach court orchestra Georg Philipp Telemann performed his works. You can visit Wilhelmsthal from the outside: the buildings are empty, there is no renovation planned.
You can rent a boat at the lake and there is a camping site "Am Altenberger See". |
