top down City Breaks: Weimar
|
Johann Sebastian Bach already knew Weimar from a six-month stay in 1703, when he was a young violinist in the court chapel. In 1708 23 year old Bach and his wife Maria Barbara moved from Muehlhausen to Weimar. Bach's daugher Catherina Dorothea, his sons Carl Philipp Emmanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann were born in Weimar. Bach taught, performed and composed in Weimar, his contract obliged him to write cantatas, Bach's 'Orgelbuechlein' dates from his time in Weimar, organ music and his 'Suites for Orchestra 1 and 2'. In 1715 Weimar Duke Wilhelm Ernst made a big mistake: Johann Sebastian Bach was passed over for the post of 'Kapellmeister', so he began to look elsewhere. When in 1717 Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Koethen offered a contract, Johann Sebastian Bach handed in his notice. Weimar Duke Wilhelm Ernst made things worse by having the musician arrested. After four weeks in prison, Bach could leave Weimar with his family.
