In 1841 Franz Liszt gave a performance in Weimar for the first time. In 1842 he accepted the a part time conducting post at the Weimar court. At the same time he continued to travel through Europe as a piano virtuoso. Weimar's classical era having come to an end, Duchess Maria Paulowna, daughter of the Russian Tsar, wished to continue the town's fame as a cultural center. She supported and paid Franz Liszt from her private income. In 1848 Liszt settled down in Weimar and worked full time at the Weimar court. He composed music for the Weimar orchestra, he conducted performances of the modern music of his times: Berlioz and Schumann, and he promoted Richard Wagner: 'Lohengrin' was first performed in Weimar. Accompanying Liszt, Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein and her infant daughter Marie arrived at Weimar in 1848. Duchess Maria Paulowna offered the 'Altenburg' house in Jenaer Strasse 3 to the Princess. In the beginning Liszt lived in the Hotel 'Erbprinz' at 'Marktplatz', in 1850 he joined Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein in the 'Altenburg'. The house became a meeting place for Liszt's circle of friends and students, among his visitors in the 'Altenburg' were Hector Berlioz, Hans von Buelow and Johannes Brahms. When Richard Wagner was in danger of arrest, Liszt organized his escape to Switzerland. Today the Franz-Liszt-Center of the Academy of Music and the Franz-Liszt-Society have their seats in the 'Altenburg'. Liszt left Weimar in 1861. You can visit the Liszt House at the Park on the Ilm river, Marienstrasse 17. Here Liszt lived when he stayed in Weimar after 1869. In 2004 director Nike Wagner named the Weimar Art Festival in memory of her great great grandfather Franz Liszt 'Pelerinages - Mal du Pays - Heimweh'.
