Eco Travel: Hiking, Cycling & Canoeing

Six miles from Eschwege, Wanfried is a fascinating stop on

canoe or bicycle tours along the Werra river or

hikes through the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park.

Walk around Wanfried and experience history!

Signs on half timbered houses tell about former residents, past greatness and events.

From the 17th century to the second half of the 19th century, Wanfried was the starting point for shipping on the river Werra and an important trade center.

During the 17th century splendid business buildings, merchant's houses, pubs, an inn, a stock exchange and a brewery were built.

The goods came from the coastal cities, the cargo was unloaded at the custom house "Auf der Schlagd" and transported by land to Thuringia and Bavaria.

Wanfried lost importance with the end of the shipping on the Werra river in the middle of the 19th century. You can still see a chimney of the cigar factory that was built during this time.

Today you can view well preserved half timbered houses, e.g. the town hall, the Klaus church or the Harmes.

In the Keudell'sche Palace you get a very vivid impression of the former border security of East Germany. The palace accommodates the Museum of Local History and Culture, and a documentation center for Germany's post-war history.

In the lovingly preserved village Altenburschla you can stay overnight in an historical atmosphere, and absolute peace and quiet.
