Klaus church in Wanfried Eco Travel: Hiking, Cycling & Canoeing |
From the inscription on the Klaus church In 972, from Byzanz - today's Istanbul, Theophanu, wife of Emperor Otto II. brought the tradition to Germany, of building "Klaus churches" as hospitals for ill fishermen and boatmen. Saint Nikolaus is the patron of the sailors and fishermen. There has already been a Klaus church in Wanfried for a very long time. The remaining buildings date from the 16th and 17th century. A large room which served as hospital during epidemics is located in the cellar. The Klaus church took care of anybody feeling ill: foreigners passing through Wanfried working in the shipping business, just as old inhabitants of Wanfried who had no family. top of page <<
