cigar factory in Wanfried Eco Travel: Hiking, Cycling & Canoeing |
From the inscription on the manor house of 1678: This spacious manor with farm buildings was designed for the custom house's manager in the immediate neighbourhood of the port... During the time of the industrialization, the situation changed for Wanfried. The shipping on the Werra declined. The town sold the custom house to Peter Israel, who installed a stone printshop in 1861. Here the bags were printed for the cigar factory situated in the opposite half-timbered house at the port. In later years the cigar bands were printed here as well. The cigars were roled by hand and pressed in the private homes of the people of the Eichsfeld. Chewing tobacco, which also was processed here, arrived via the Weser-Werra shipping route from Bremen to Wanfried. The chimney of the factory has been kept as an industrial monument. After 1927, the firm of Israel switched to offset printing and, among other things, printed for Beck's beer in Bremen, which at that time, still used the black, white and red labels. top of page <<
