Treffurt is an attractive stop-over at the Werra Valley Cycling Trail, at the Nature Park Hiking Trail from Heiligenstadt to Creuzburg or on Canoe Tours from Creuzburg to Eschwege. Treffurt also is a good starting point for bicycle trips along the Werra river, the Unstrut river and the surrounding mountains. On the 20 mile Unstrut Werra Cycling Trail you climb a 75 gradient riding along Hainich National Park from Heldra near Treffurt to Muehlhausen. In summer, you relax in the Treffurt open air swimming pool. The Tourist Information in the town center shows a Nature Park Exhibition. You see half timbered buildings in all variations: In the town center, there is the town hall - a half timbered Renaissance building from 1610. In nice weather, climb up to Normannstein Castle, from there you have a marvelous view of the Werra Valley. The castle ruins above Treffurt date from the 12th century. The Bonifatius church also has Romanesque components, the building was completed in Gothic style. Go to Schnellmannshausen for the best view over the Werra Valley. From Schnellmannshausen you climb on the 151 feet Heldrastein mountain. On the limestone cliff there is a viewing platform - a former East German radar tower. The village church tower in Schnellmannshausen dates back to the 12th century. In Heldra village storks nest in spring. Heldra is 1.2 miles from Treffurt. In the village church of Grossburschla near Treffurt parts of a Romanesque basilica from the 12th century have been uncovered and restored. The Baroque village church in the district of Falken is worth seeing. top of page <<
