You can recognize the two basalt conical Gleichberg mountains from far away. They stand like twins in the flat surrounding landscape. On the Gleichberg mountains and in nearby Roemhild you discover the history of an area where people have lived for more than 3000 years. In the Steinsburg Museum you see the the burial objects and household articles that were found during excavations. You hike through the nature reserves or go on a cycling tour around the Gleichberg mountains. You go strolling in Roemhild's historical town center, visit traditional potteries and the ceramics museum in the medieval palace. The Gleichberge Youth Center caters for groups of children and teenagers. The center offers accomodation, guided tours, excursions and project work on history and nature. In summer the forest open air swimming pool is open. The Thuringian Geographical Institutes posts a topographical map of the Roemhild and Hildburghausen area for 5 Euro and a topographical hiking map of the Thuringian Rhoen for 5,10 Euro: top of page << Pre and Early HistoryThe oldest objects found on the Gleichberg mountains date from the Stone Age 1000 years B.C.E. Between 600 and 100 B.C.E. there was a Celtic fortificaton on the Kleine Gleichberg, this settlement was at its peak about 600 to 100 B.C.E. Today, you can still recognize the ramparts. The Kleine Gleichberg remained a meeting place for some time. Legends mention the Kleine Gleichberg as a place of worship in Pre-Christian times. And you find the ruins of a medieval pilgrimage church on the plateau of the Kleine Gleichberg. The church burnt down in the 16th century. You can see some of the objects found during excavations in the Steinsburg Museum in Waldhaus situated between the two Gleichberg mountains. top of page << Hiking ToursSignposted archaeological hiking trails and nature discovery trails of any length you might wish start from the Steinsburg Museum. A 37.2 mile long Celts' Panoramic Trail leads from the two Gleichberg mountains to the Blessberg mountain. On this hiking trip you never lose sight of your starting point and your destination. The Celts' Panoramic Trail is part of the 124 mile long Celts' Discovery Trail from the Dolmar mountain near Meiningen through the South of Thuringia up to Bad Windsheim an der Aisch in the Franconian Hassberge Nature Park. A 15.5 mile long part of the trail leads from Milz along the Gleichberg mountains past the half timbered village of Dingsleben, via St. Bernhard, Beinerstadt, Widderstadt to Juechsen. top of page << Cycling TourA 18.6 miles long cycling tour leads you through mountainous area from Gleichamberg via Roth, Zeilfeld, the half-timbered village of Dingsleben, via Obendorf, Haina, Roemhild, Milz, Hindfeld back to Gleichamberg. The gothic churches of Gleichamberg, Haina and Milz are worth seeing. top of page << RoemhildThe traditional potteries in Roemhild sell ceramics and copies of the Celtic pots and bowls found at the Gleichberg mountains. You can watch demonstrations of the production processes. In the medieval Gluecks-Burg palace international ceramic art is on display. Do not miss the Gothic church of Roemhild and the bronze grave plates, which were cast by the Nurenberg workshop of Peter Vischer the Elder around 1500. top of page <<
