In the footsteps of the Celts in Bad Nauheim you climb the Johannisberg mountain where you enjoy very good view on the Wetterau region, visit the historical town center, the spa gardens and graduation works, relax in the brine baths and wave swimming pools. A large ice arena is bordering on the spa park, opened in winter for ice skating, hockey and curling. It takes you approximately half an hour from Frankfurt to Bad Nauheim by regional trains from Frankfurt Main Station or by car driving the motorway A5 direction Kassel, exit "Bad Nauheim". A number of cycling trails take you through the Wetterau region along the Usa river. 500 years B.C.E. the brine at Bad Nauheim was already used by Celts. >> excavation of Celtic saltern In 1835 the first bath house was built. The research of Dr. Bode and Prof. Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Beneke on balneotherapy provides the basis for Bad Nauheim's rise as leading spa for cardiovascular diseases. Bad Nauheim's list of illustrious guests includes crowned heads, politicians, scientists, industrialists, writers, composers, painters: the last German empress Auguste Victoria, the last Russian tsarina Alexandra Feodorowna, "Sissi", empress Elisabeth of Austria, Emil von Behring, Otto von Bismarck, William Randolph Hearst, Alfried Krupp, Wilhelm Leibl, Emil Nolde, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, August Bebel, Erich Kaestner, King Ibn Saud I., Muhamed Anwar al Sadat, Rabinadrath Tagore, Richard Strauss, Prinz Bernhard von den Niederlanden, Arthur Honegger. In 1920 Albert Einstein gave a talk on "Curved Space and Bent Time" on the occasion of the Bad Nauheim conference of the Association of German Natural Scientists and Physicians. William G. Kerckhoff from Los Angeles is a patient of the Bad Nauheim doctor Prof. Franz Groedel in the 1920's. In 1929 his widow donates 1 million dollars to fund the William G. top of page << Johannisberg mountainFrom the 879 feet Johannisberg mountain you have a very good view on Bad Nauheim, on the Wetterau region and on part of the Vogelsberg region. Once there was a Celtic and Germanic place of worship on the Johannesberg mountain. Excavations found settlements from the Stone and Bronze Age. In 779 the missionary church on the Johannisberg mountain was mentioned for the first time: the first Christian parish in the northern Wetterau region. The church tower has been preserved, you can visit a public observatory in the tower. The cafe at the Johannisberg mountain had the Austrian empress Sissi among its guests. top of page << SightsSightseeing round trips are signposted in the historical city center of Bad Nauheim, in the spa gardens and at the graduation works. There are two ponds, you find a boat rental at the larger pond.
When you visit the old town center of Bad Nauheim have a look at the tithe barn at the gate to the castle: The barn was used by Elvis Presley as the motif of a record cover. You can walk or cycle along the Usa river to Friedberg (regional S-train S6, Frankfurt city center to Friedberg station) where Elvis served in the Ray Barracks. Elvis, his father, his grandmother and his guards first lived in the Park Nauheim Park Hotel, from there they moved to the Hotel Grunewald in Terrassenstrasse close to the Spa House, finally Elvis rented the house in Goethestrasse 14. top of page << Graduation WorksBad Nauheim's brine consists of 3 percent salt. Instead of the costly heating by wood or coal, in Bad Nauheim sun and wind are used. The brine trickles through walls of blackthorn brushwood - the graduation works - producing a brine with 13 to 16 percent salt saturation. WellnessIn the quiet and relaxing thermal brine swimming bath "Therme am Park" next to the spa park, you can choose between three pools with temperatures of 80.6 to 96.8 degree Fahrenheit (27 to 36 degree Celsius). Please note: Children up to 4 years of age are not allowed in. You find a special area for babies and toddlers, wave pools and water-jet massage, a giant water slide, saunas and solariums, and a heated open air swimming pool in the Usa wave swimming pool, located between Friedberg and Bad Nauheim. Following the Usa river to Friedberg you can walk or cycle the 3km distance. Busses from Bad Nauheim to Friedberg stop in front of the pool. In summer there is an additional open air swimming pool and a lawn for sunbathing. top of page << |
