Eco Travel: Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park

The Nature Park Hiking Trail from Creuzburg to Heiligenstadt is a less crowded alternative to the popular Rennsteig Trail through the Thuringian forest.

Plan for 5 days to hike the 62 mile trail.

Starting from Creuzburg you hike across the Nature Park.

In the beginning the trail leads you along the Werra river via Scherbda, Frankenroda, Falken, Treffurt, along the slopes of deep valleys, via Wendehausen, Katharinenberg, Faulungen, Lengenfeld u. Stein, Doeringsdorf, Großbartloff, Kuellstedt, Wachstedt, Martinfeld, Bernterode, Fuerstenhagen, Lutter to Heiligenstadt.

The Baroque village church of Falken is worth visiting.

You get a good view on the valley from the pilgrimage church on the Huelfenberg mountain near Doeringsdorf.

You pass Creuzburg and Treffurt castles.

Twice a day from March to October, the falconry at Gleichenstein Castle near Wachstedt offers a demonstration showing flying falcons, buzzards, kites, eagles, vultures and - a condor!

The place of pilgrimage Klueschen Hagis at the foot of the Gleichenstein mountain is remarkable. Here, a pilgrimage of men takes place at Ascension.

In the Martinfeld Youth Hostel you sleep in a Renaissance Palace built in 1611.

On your way you enjoy the nature, the juniper tree heaths, the beeches and deciduous mixed forests.

In Heiligenstadt you relax in the thermal bath or in the open air swimming pool.

If you start in Heiligenstadt, you pass the Nature Park Information in Fuerstenhagen at the beginning of the trail.

There is an open air swimming pool in Treffurt.

You obtain detailed information at the Nature Park Administration in Fuerstenhagen.
