Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock: The Rosy Ribbon (1752)

In the shadow of springtime I found her
and bound her with ribbons of roses.
She did not feel them and slept on.
I looked at her; my life hung
by this look on her life;
I felt it well and knew it not.
But wordlessly I whispered
and rustled the rosy ribbons;
so she awoke from her sleep.
She looked at me; her life hung
by this look on my life.
And around us there was Elysium.

Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was employed as private tutor by relatives in Langensalza from 1748-1750.

'The Rosy Ribbon/Das Rosenband' was set to music by: e.g. Edward MacDowell, Franz Schubert, Josef Antonin Stepan, Richard Strauss, Karl Friedrich Zelter and Alexander Zemlinsky.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774)

... we went to the window. It was still thundering at a distance: a soft rain was pouring down over the country and filled the air around us with delicious odours.

Charlotte leaned forward on her arm; her eyes wandered over the sceneM she raised them to the sky, and turned them upon me; they were moistened with tears; she placed her hand on mine and said, "Klopstock!" -

at once I remembered the magnificent ode which was in her thoughts: I felt oppressed with the weight of my sensations, and sank under them. It was more than I could bear. I bent over her hand, kissed it in a stream of delicious tears, and again looked up to her eyes.

Divine Klopstock! why didst thou not see thy apotheosis in those eyes? And thy name so often profaned, would that I never heard it repeated! ...
