Bad Langensalza - town wall Wellness in Spas: Bad Langensalza |
Clemens Brentano on Langensalza in a letter to his sister Sophie (Summer 1796): I am sunk in work from morning to evening, from 6 o'clock in the morning to 6 o'clock in the evening, and from 6 o'clock in the evening to 10 o'clock all you do is drinking bear from wooden kegs, and when you are finished, you court the 18, 19, 17-year old respectable and respected, confirmed and religious, well-educated, Christian legitimate daughters of the local honorable administrative clerks and civil servants. Praise the Lord. That's how it is. A while ago I danced at a small ball, and the next day all sorts of flowers were sent to me, wild roses, snapdragons, Spanish brooms, the flowers you are supposed to walk on when wishing a happy new year, with quotes from Rousseau, from Voltaire and from the Roman poets. I felt like an ornamented ox on Whitsun, who can't eat hay because of the flowers. Here, beloved ladies, your habits are different. When a young men in society sleeps in a corner and wakes up from the sound of people leaving, he kisses the hand of every women, which she lifts up to him unasked, no matter if he has seen her the first time when he woke up or if he was in her house for the first time. It is terrible, when people part in the evenings and, tenderly from their mouths, the gentlemen and ladies greedily lick the foam of the bear they drank or the bread crumbs they ate, and on top of that the ladies kiss first. I could never get used to this custom, and I am therefore extremely unpopular here now. Clemens Brentano was extremely unpopular because he had compared his master's wife, who was related to Klopstock, to a high-legged crow, walking through a stubble field. He did not have to continue his apprenticeship in Langensalza.
