Ilmenau offers concerts, exhibitions and A small town at the Thuringian Forest near the Rennsteig Trail, Ilmenau has a Technical University and a famous admirer. The poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stayed here 28 times. You walk in Goethe's footsteps in the beautiful landscape of the surrounding mountains.
Goethe Hiking Trail >> FitnessNear Ilmenau, at Stuetzerbach, the Rennsteig Hiking and Cycling Trail takes you through the Thuringian Forest. On the Ilm Cycling Trail you cycle from the springs of the Ilm river near the Rennsteig Trail at Allzunah past Stuetzerbach and Ilmenau, via Stadtilm, Kranichfeld, Bad Berka to Weimar, Tiefurt and Ossmannstedt, on to Apolda and the Saale river at Kaatschen. You cycle through the places where the poet and minister of state Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent most of his life. The trails around Ilmenau are used by mountainbikers: There is a 24 hours mountainbike-marathon at the end of August / beginning of September. In winter you go cross-skiing in the mountains. A small ski-lift takes you uphill. The Ilmenau ski school offers snowboard courses. There is an artificial ice rink for ice skaters from November to March. In the swimming hall you relax in the swimming pool or in the sauna. The toboggan racing course is opened throughout the year. In September there is an international Summer-Toboggan-Cup Race in Ilmenau. The heated open air swimming pool in Ilmenau guarantees 24°Celsius from the beginning of May to the Middle of September. In nearby Stuetzerbach you relax in the forest open air swimming pool at the Goethe Hiking Trail. At the "Großen Teich" lake there is a playground for children and a boat hire. top of page << EventsThe Jazzclub Ilmenau organizes international Jazz Days in the end of April. In October and November concerts of the Thuringian Jazz mile take place in Ilmenau. The Technical University hosts Folk Days in October. The gallery in the Alte Foersterei offers art exhibitions and workshops . The "Alte Försterei" is the oldest building in Ilmenau. The house was part of the Rococco palace of the Weimar duke, that burnt down. top of page << MarketsIn the beginning of May you can shop at a pottery market. In the middle of December there is a Christmas Market. Since 1777 the manufacturer Graf von Henneberg produced porcelain in Ilmenau.
