Hiking Trail at the Wartburg near Eisenach

The Rennsteig is very popular with many guests. It is absolutely necessary that you book your accommodation in advance.

The classic Rennsteig tour through the Thuringian Forest and the Schiefer mountains is designed for physically fit hikers and consists of six stages. Each of the stages is 13 to 20 miles long.

1. From the Werra river near Hoerschel past the Wartburg Castle, Eisenach, Ruhla, Bad Liebenstein near Bad Salzungen to the 275 feet Grosse Inselsberg mountain - 21 miles

2. From the Grosse Inselsberg mountain past Tabarz and Friedrichroda to Oberhof - 19 miles

3. From Oberhof past Zella-Mehlis, Suhl, Schmiedefeld and Stuetzerbach near Ilmenau to Neustadt am Rennsteig - 17 miles

4. From Neustadt am Rennsteig past Masserberg, Friedrichshoehe, Limbach and Lauscha over the Eselsberg mountain to Neuhaus am Rennsteig - 19 miles

5. From Neuhaus am Rennsteig to Steinbach am Wald - 14 miles

6. From Steinbach am Wald to the Saale river at Blankenstein - 18 miles

The following example is a more relaxed Rennsteig Tour in 8 stages. Be careful when planning this: the majority of accommodation is not directly at the stage points.

1. Hoerschel to Ascherbrueck/Ruhla - 12 miles
The majority of accommodations are in Ruhla in circa 2.5 miles distance from the Rennsteig Trail.

2. Ascherbrueck/Ruhla to Heuberghaus - 12 miles
The majority of accomodations are in Friedrichroda in circa 6.2 miles distance from the Rennsteig Trail.

3. Heuberghaus to Grenzadler Oberhof - 15 miles
The majority of accommodations are in Oberhof in circa 1.9 to 2.5 miles distance from the Rennsteig Trail.

4. Oberhof to Bahnhof Rennsteig - 11 miles
The majority of accommodations are in Frauenwald - circa 4.3 miles from Rennsteig

5. Bahnhof Rennsteig to Masserberg - 12.4 miles
There are hotels & guesthouses in Masserberg

6. Masserberg to Ernstthal - 15.5 miles
There is basic accommodation in Ernstthal (only very few beds) - circa 1.6 to 2.5 miles from Rennsteig.

7. Ernstthal to Brennersgruen - 16.1 miles
There is an inn in Brennersgruen (5 rooms), next accommodations are 6.2 to 12.4 miles from Rennsteig.

8. Brennersgruen to Blankenstein 12.4 miles
There are hotels and guesthouses in Blankenstein.

A track for mountain bikes runs parallel to the Rennsteig hiking trail.
