Rennsteig

The 104 mile Rennsteig ridgeway leads across the Thuringian Forest and the Schiefer Mountains, past the Biosphere Reserve Vessertal, from West to East, from the Werra river to the Saale river.

You start at Hoerschel near Eisenach, pass the Wartburg Castle, and continue via Oberhof, Stuetzerbach near Ilmenau, to Blankenstein.

Walking along the watershed of the rivers Elbe and Rhine, the spoken German you hear will change from Thuringian to Franconian dialect, you will pass medieval boundary stones and stone crosses, and you will cross the once much feared East and West German border that fell in 1989.

The Rennsteig used to be a short-cut: On your hike you will walk in the footsteps of Celtic and Germanic tribes, of Roman legionaries, of missionaries, of Martin Luther, of Goethe and of Napoleon on his way to the battle at Jena and Auerstedt.

Depending on your physical fitness, you will need six to ten days for all stages of the Rennsteig hiking trail.

The Rennsteig is very popular, and frequently visited. Therefore, it is critical that accommodations be booked in advance.

In the middle of May, the traditional "Rennsteig-Lauf" takes place: There is a 46,5 mile Europa Cup super marathon, a marathon or a half marathon. Hikers can choose between several distances. Eisenach, Neuhaus and Oberhof are starting points. At the finishing post in Schmiedefeld runners and hikers celebrate a big party.

Hiking Trail through Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park

Less traveled and somewhat shorter, a 63 mile hiking trail from Creuzburg to Heiligenstadt takes you through the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park, from the Werra River to the Leine River.

Plan five days for this hike.

From Creuzburg you walk along the Werra river to Treffurt. From there, the trail leads you along the slopes of the valleys, past castles and palaces, cloisters and pilgrimage churches, to Heiligenstadt.

The Rennstieg trail is 19,4 miles long.

Rhoen Hoehenweg

Bad Salzungen is the starting point or finishing post of the 85 mile ridgeway across the Rhoen Biosphere Reserve and Nature Park. You walk through the mountainous areas and high lying moors, from Franconia to Thuringia, across the former East and West German border, from the Werra river to the proximity of the Main river near Gemuenden.

You hike from Burgsinn via Rossbach, Dreistelz, past Bad Brueckenau, via Farnsberg, Feuerberg, past the cloister, the pilgrim's inn and pilgrimage church on the Kreuzberg mountain, via Oberweissenbrunn, Himmeldunkberg, across the Rote Moor, over the Heidelstein mountain past the Wasserkuppe mountain, across the Schwarze Moor, via Frankenheim, Stadtlengsfeld to Bad Salzungen.
