Hiking & Cycling in Hainich National Park

In Hainich National Park you walk through nature and history: Many spots will remind you of the medieval trade routes and settlements.

The trails are well marked. Starting points and exits are the parking lots off the roads and villages around Hainich National Park, e.g. the parking lots near Muelverstedt and Kammerforst, the parking lot at the Harsberg mountain near Lauterbach, the Kindel parking lot between Großenlupnitz and Behringen, the Thiemsburg parking lot between Zimmern und Craula.

In Hainich National Park you can hike from two hours up to two days.

The longest hike, the 19.4 mile Rennstieg trail, takes you along the ridge of the plateau.

The considerably shorter 1.6 miles Nachtigallen hiking trail leads you from the Kindel parking lot to the Silbersee - the "silver lake". The lake is the center of a biotope with numerous ponds, with waterfowl, frogs and toads.

For the 7 mile Betteleichen round trip hiking trail to the Begging Oak starting from the Obergut parking lot in Kammerforst you need about four hours.

Crosses were erected at places where people died suddenly in an accident, when they could not receive the last sacrament.

You arrive at the cross at Craula, the Craulaer Kreuz, in approximately two and a half hours. You walk 4.7 miles starting from the Craula parking lot.

You pass two crosses and the Begging Oak on the 5.8 mile Bummelkuppen hiking trail, starting from the parking lot at the Harsberg mountain near Lauterbach.

You will see orchids, irises and alpine newts on your way to the Huenenteich pond. The trail is about 4 miles long. Starting point is either the parking lot in Muelverstädt or the parking lot in Kammerforst. Both parking lots are also starting points for the 5.9 mile hiking trail to Saugraben.

The Thiemsburg parking lot is situated on the road connecting Zimmern and Craula. From here you can walk on the 6.5 mile Steinberg hiking trail and the 2.2 mile Eichenberg hiking trail, or you take the 7.4 mile trail from Thiemsburg to Bad Langensalza.

The Goldackersche Schloss, a small renaissance palace in Weberstedt, is the starting point of a nature discovery trail. You set out from the palace garden where the trees are several hundred years old.

You can take a bus to the villages around Hainich from Eisenach, Bad Langensalza and Muehlhausen.

A complete survey map and description of the trails can be obtained at the National Park Administration in Bad Langensalza.

The National Park Administration offers bird call trips, morning and evening observation tours, excursions, horse carriage rides and bicycle tours. Children listen to fairy tales, look for Easter eggs, accompany the National Park Rangers, or fly a kite in autumn.

From April to October, on weekends and on bank holidays, special busses are run and the Hainich Express takes you from Muelverstedt directly into the National Park to the Ihlefeld.

The two mile long Brunstal discovery trail from the Fuchsfarm parking lot in Muelverstedt is accessible for wheelchairs.

A bicycle sign marks hiking trails permitted for cyclists. Two cycling trails take you across Hainich National Park: From East to West you go from Bad Langensalza via Thiemsburg, Craulaer Kreuz to Berka vor dem Hainich, from North to South from Muehlhausen via Kammerforst to Berka vor dem Hainich. You obtain detailed information from the National Park Information.

You can buy a National Park Hiking and Cycling Map posted by German booksellers.
