Casemates of Schloss Friedenstein Text and Fotos: Stadt-Marketing Gotha City Trips: Gotha |
The Fortifications of Friedenstein PalaceFew visitors know that once one of the area's strongest Baroque fortresses surrounded Friedenstein Palace. Commissioned by Duke Ernst "the Pious" as the residence of his dukedom Saxe - Gotha, Friedenstein Palace was built from 1643 to 1655 on the ruins of Grimmenstein Castle. On July 3, 1655 the corner stone was laid. Construction works for the main building were finished in 1672. Because of the threat of a Turkish invasion, from 1663 onwards a fortress was built. The fortifications were finished in 1686, luckily for Gotha, they were never put to the test. From 1772 onwards, commissioned by Duke Ernst II of Saxe - Gotha - Altenburg, the palace park was completed and the then obsolete fortifications were put down. In 1800 the ramparts were demolished and the ditches were filled. The Subterranian CasematesRecently parts of the Baroque casemates under the park below Friedenstein Palace have been excavated and opened for visitors. In the 17th century, 1.6 mile long casemates were built, today, on a guided tour, you walk circa 0.2 mile in today's underground vaults.
