Setting up the Maypole in Seebach Festivals & Events |
In most cases maypoles are erected at the central meeting place of a village, near churches or local inns. As a fertility symbol the maypole was part of the Pre-Christian rites of spring. Later, the tree represented commerce, artisans and inn keepers. The setting up of the maypole takes place in the Walpurgis night on April 30th, on May 1st or during the month of May. Seebach is an exception: Here you can watch the setting up of the maypole on Whitsun Saturday. The custom requires that the tree is set up by traditional techniques and modern machines are not used. Young men from neighbouring villages might steal the tree. There are traditional guidelines on how to steal the maypole and how to get it back by paying for meals and drinks. top of page <<
