You stop over in Eschwege on a bicycle tour along the Werra Valley Trail, on a canoe trip on the Werra river or on a hike in the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park. In summer you may cool off in the pedestrian zone in one of the many street cafes or in the big swimming pool. On the Werratal Lake sailing, surfing and water-skiing is offered. In winter the indoor swimming pool with sauna is there for your relaxation. On the nearby Hohe Meissner (2473 feet), there are ski lifts and cross-country skiing runs. Eschwege lies on the old trade route from West to East. The largest portion of the beautiful well preserved half-timbered houses were built after the city was set on fire in 1637 during the Thirty Years War. The oldest remaining building, the black tower, dates back to the 12th century. Docks and warehouses are reminiscent of the times when the Hansa merchants shipped goods on the Werra river from Bremen to the South. Six miles from Eschwege the goods were unloaded at Wanfried to be transported overland to Thuringia and Bavaria. In the nineteenth century tobacco was processed in Eschwege, as well as leather and cloth. In the 1920's the Eschwege artist Ernst Metz drew the Werra Valley and Creuzburg.
