Christmas Recipes: Plaetzchen

Muerbteig Plaetzchen - German Christmas Cookie Recipe

The following is a very simple traditional German cookie recipe with lots of fun for kids - they can cut out and decorate the cookies. Make sure you roll the dough out thinly - the recipe relies heavily on butter.

Dough: 8.8 oz (250 g) butter, 4.4 oz (125g) icing sugar, 1 sachet vanilla sugar, 10.5 oz (300 g) wheat flour, 2 teaspoonful of milk

Melt the butter, leave to cool - important: the butter should not be too soft -, mix slowly with the vanilla and icing sugar, keep stirring until butter and sugar form a white foamy substance.

Add the 2/3 of the flour slowly, add the milk, knead briefly the rest of the flour into the dough. Leave to cool in the fridge for a day.

Roll out the dough thinly, cut out the cookies, put on a baking sheet or greased baking tray bake for 5 minutes 356 - 374 degrees Fahrenheit / 180 - 190 degrees Celsius.

You may decorate the cookies if you wish: icing, chocolates, nuts...

Plaetzchen should be stored in tin boxes.

Plaetzchen taste best with Gluehwein.
