Travelling by bike in Central Europe is often best - and very enjoyable in summer. Cycling trails run along rivers and parallel to hiking trails. In the cities of Frankfurt and Berlin riding a bike in combination with using U-, S- and local trains is the fastest way to get around. You can take your bike along with you in almost all trains. You book the bike service, when you buy your train ticket. Ask the ticket inspector, whether there is enough room, if you have not been able to book in advance. Depending on the area taking your bike is free or you have to pay an extra charge. You can take your bike free of charge in all the S-, U-trains and trams in the Frankfurt area - with the exception of the rush hour: You should not take your bike in Frankfurt U-trains and trams between 6:00 to 8:30 or 16:00 to 18:30. In Berlin you need a separate bike ticket for single rides on S-trains. In Berlin and in Frankfurt you can rent a bike all over the city per "Call a Bike". You register by mobile stating your bank account or your credit card number. If you find one of the bikes parked near the main junctions, you phone in using the number you find on the bike and receive the code to open the lock. A service hotline registers parked bikes and tells you where they are. You find detailed information in English at www.callabike.de Partners of the German Railways rent bikes in many places, e.g. in Muehlhausen, Erfurt, Weimar, Dessau and Heiligenstadt. You obtain information (mostly in German) by clicking into www.bahn.de (click into "Int. Guests" for English information), on the bicycle hotline of the German Railways 0 18 05-15 15 15 (Euro 0,12/minute), in the brochure "Bahn & Bike" from the German Cycling Association "Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad Club" www.adfc.de. top of page <<
