Historical Town

At Creuzburg, a by-pass of the medieval trade route from Cologne and Cassel led over the Werra river to Erfurt. The old stonebridge over the Werra river corresponds to the Romanesque Bridge from the 13th century. The late gothic Liborius Chapel at the bridge was built in 1499, the frescoes in the chapel were painted by a local artist in 1520.

The church was initially built with the town in 1215, this is also the origination of the Romanesque choir.

A large part of Creuzburg including the church was destroyed in 1945: The war had already been won, when National Socialists forced their last reserves along the "line of the Werra river" into a hopeless fight against the US-Army.

The Romanesque choir could be restored and can once again be seen.

In the 1920's the Eschwege artist Ernst Metz drew the Werra Valley and Creuzburg. You can get the prints via Abebooks UK or via Abebooks US/Canada.

Medieval Castle

Creuzburg Castle was, in the Middle Ages, an extension of the Wartburg Castle. Here in 1222, 15 year old Saint Elisabeth, wife of the landgrave of the Wartburg Castle, gave birth to her son Hermann and in 1227 to her youngest daugher Gertrud, after her husband had died from Malaria on a crusade to Jerusalem.

The houses within the circular wall of the castle go back to the Romanesque period. Later, these foundations were built upon during the renaissance with half-timbered structures.

Today, you will find the Museum of Local History and Culture with a hotel and restaurant in the castle.

A three day medieval festival takes place at Pentecost.

The composer and musicologist Michael Praetorius was born in Creuzburg around 1570. In the beginning of September 1st the Michael-Praetorius-Society organizes lectures and concerts in the castle.
