Werra River

From the 17th to the 19th century, the Hanseatic League transported goods on the Werra and Weser rivers from Bremen to the south. In Wanfried the ships were unloaded and transport continued overland.

You canoe from Meiningen to Bad Salzungen, or from Creuzburg, to Treffurt and Eschwege.

On the Werra you canoe past trading posts and castles of times gone by. Attracted by the brine springs, Celts settled in the river valley near Bad Salzungen and Vacha.

You reach Meiningen and Bad Salzungen via Eisenach by train, there are buses to Eschwege and Creuzburg from Goettingen or Eisenach.
