The Fridericianum constructed by the architect Simon Louis du Ry in 1779 is one of the first public museum buildings, commissioned by the landgrave Friedrich II in the spirit of the enlightenment. The landgrave financed the building by leasing Hessian soldiers, to fight for the English in the American war of independance. The opening of the Fridericianum coincided with a business trip of Friedrich II to England.

The Fridericianum is the central exhibition hall of documenta. The documenta hall, erected on the occasion of documenta 9 in 1992, is located nearby on the north of Friedrichplatz square at Du-Ry-Strasse.
The Karlsaue Park at Friedrichplatz used to be a Baroque garden on the Fulda river, end of the 18th century the park was transformed into an English landscape garden. Here used to be the town palace of the landgraves (electors since 1803). The federal garden show in 1955 in the Karlsaue Park coincides with the first documenta art exhibition. The federal garden show in 1981 reconstructed the original Baroque version of the Karlsaue Park.
In Kassel's modern center you find a pedestrian zone with shops, restaurants, museums, theater, variety shows, casino and wellness center.

The former summer residence Schloss Wilhelmshoehe was erected by the architect Simon Louis du Ry from 1786 onwards. In the Early Middle Ages a cloister stood on the white rock in front of the Habichtswald forest, later a hunting palace. The trick fountains were planned by the landgraves from 1696 onwards, in 1700 landgrave Karl met the master builder in Italy, the Hercules figure was erected on the mountain top's pyramid in 1713. Today the mountain park surrounding Schloss Wilhelmshoehe is an English landscape garden with trick fountains, green house, ball house and artificial ruins. A straight alley takes you from Kassel to the palace.
In 1866 Hessen Kassel lost the war against Prussia, the last elector went into exile to Prague. Schloss Wilhelmshoehe became the summer residence of the German emperors, a spa developed for the court. Today you can have a bath in thermal brine at the end of Wilhelmshoeher Allee, a part of the mountain park is a spa park.

Hann Muenden is situated in ca 25 km distance from Kassel at the confluence of Fulda and Werra for the Weser river. In 1727 the popular Bavarian traveling medic Johann Andreas Eisenbarth died here. The carillon on the town hall shows him pulling out a tooth. By train, it takes you ca. 20 minutes from Hann Muenden station to Kassel main station.
