Thal on the Rennsteig trail between the stage points Hoerschel and Ruhla used to be a nature spa in the 19th century. You pass karst formations and caves, you visit the nearly 800 year old cloister Weissenborn and the 600 year old center of village lime tree. From the more than 800 year old castle ruins of Scharfenberg you enjoy a good view on the Thuringian Forest, the Inselsberg mountain, the Wartburg Castle and the Hoerselberg mountains. You can walk into the Kittelsthal dripstone cave up to 48m depth: Since 1896 there have been guided tours into the cave from April to October. Today you find a wellness hotel at the Luisenbad spa of Dr. Krug, built in 1857
