... Prenzlauer Berg was built in the second half of the 19th century, residential apartment blocks were connected by inner courtyards, the better flats facing the road, cheap flats in the backyards. Berlin's city planner James Hobrecht intended a mix of inhabitants to prevent slums. Property speculation and Berlin's growing population resulted in worse living conditions than originally planned. During GDR times Prenzlauer Berg families moved to newly built flats, the decaying houses were let to artists, dissidents moved in.
